Nechako Waste Reduction Initiative
The Nechako Healthy Community Alliance hosted its 2018 Annual General Meeting on January 21, 2018 and member groups provided reports on their 2017 activities and plans for 2018.
The Nechako Waste Reduction Initiative‘s nine members and part-time Sustainability Coordinator have a mission to initiate and support effective ways to reduce waste in the community of Vanderhoof. Funded by the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako, NWRI hosted a number of events, managed recycling services and raised awareness of their services and provided individuals and groups with the tools to produce less waste.
Events included the May 2017 Community Clean Up which sees scores of volunteers pick up trash in and around Vanderhoof, and the annual Fall Community Garden Harvest Dinner where local food fed over 200 people.
The Nechako Valley Food Network was also involved with the annual Fall Community Garden Harvest Dinner, as was the Vanderhoof YMCA, who played a large role in organizing the event. Financial support was provided by the District of Vanderhoof.
Vanderhoof volunteer Nechako Waste Reduction Initiative members diverted 99 metric tons of mixed paper and plastics from landfills…. the equivalent of 11 metric tons each! What an impact these amazing volunteers created!
Thanks also to all residents who take their paper and plastics to the recycling station.
Another fantastic initiative of the Nechako Valley Waste Reduction Initiative is their Green Tookit. This is a huge set of dishes – plates, cups, cutlery, etc., that is loaned out to families for weddings, organizations for community events and used at sporting and school events, reducing the use of paper plates and cups and plastic cutlery.
The Green Toolkit was used 51 times in 2017. Dishes need to be washed before being returned, and are sanitized by a Nechako Waste Reduction Initiative employee before going back out into the community.
The Nechako Waste Reduction Initiative has brought curbside recycling to Vanderhoof, BC residents, with 132 households using the service. Curbside recycling receives financial support from the District of Vanderhoof.
